IRAP Therapy

IRAP, which stands for interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein, is one of the newest treatments horses with synovitis, degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis while preventing further joint damage. Osteoarthritis (OA) affects a horse's musculoskeletal system, specifically the joints. Joint problems can include pain, stiffness, inflammation and damage to the joint cartilage. These can inhibit a horse's performance and affect his quality of life. IRAP is naturally present in the body and helps prevent OA. IRAP therapy aims to increase this protein in the horse so the body can naturally fight OA. Traditional joint therapy only treats the symptoms while IRAP therapy actually inhibits one of the disease processes major causes. IRAP therapy provides your horse longer-lasting relief and benefits compared to traditional joint treatments.

In order to do IRAP therapy we draw blood from your horse in a special syringe which contains specially treated glass beads. These beads increase the surface area in the syringe. During the incubation period (20-22 hrs) blood cells interact with the bead surface, which simulates a wound. This interaction causes a large production of IRAP and other anti-inflammatory products.

After the incubation period the syringe is put into a centrifuge to seperate the serum from the blood. The serum is then injected into the joint(s) to be treated or frozen to be used at a later date. Treatments usually include three injections set at a specified time apart dependent on the joint.

For more information or if you think your horse is a canidate for IRAP feel free to contact our office
