Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a new treatment modality that can be used to treat refractory conditions by stimulating the animal’s natural repair mechanisms. Shockwaves are high energy soundwaves that are transmitted to the affected body part. These waves can help trigger the patient’s repair mechanisms. Some conditions that shockwave is useful in treating include bowed tendons, suspensory injuries, “bucked shins”, “splints” and joint disease. This method of therapy can dramatically enhance the rate of soft tissue and bone healing. Horses undergoing shockwave therapy usually require multiple treatment sessions.
